The Crossmans of Crosse

The surname Crossman is Anglo-Saxon. The name John Croseman of Crosse is listed in the Heralds' Visitation of Cornwall, England taken in 1620. The record states that John Croseman was living in in the 24th year of King Henry VII (i.e. 1509). These pedigrees were reproduced by J.L. Vivian in 1887 from drafts of the originals contained in the Harleian Collection preserved in the British Museum, the College of Arms, and other sources.

King Henry VII
Charles Brendon
Edward Crosman of Crosse was married to Joane Brendon, the sister of Sir Richard Brendon, Comptroller of the Royal Household of King Henry VII.
Joane's father William was Henry VII's standard-bearer at the Battle of Bosworth Field and died while defending the king in hand to hand combat with Richard III. Joane's brother, Charles Brendon, was married to Mary Tudor, King Henry VIII's sister. During the reigns of both Henry VII and Henry VIII, the Crossman's always had close ties to the King.

The Trial of John Crossman

John Crossman was the first Crossman to arrive on American soil in 1638. The Author discusses the religious environment in England that led up to his emigration to America in the Great Migration. After he settled in Massachusetts Bay Colony, Crossman was put on trial for speaking out against the religious persecution of Quakers by the Puritan government. He was tried and convicted of blasphemy, branded with a 'B' on his forehead and banished from the colony.

"But his name will be held in fond remembrance as the progenitor of a family which has filled a large place in the history of Taunton and laid the present and future generations under great obligations to it for the foundations of growth and prosperity upon which they are permitted to build."   Biographical History of Massachusetts, History of Taunton.

Military Crossmans

F4-D Phantom II

In February, 1968, Lt. Colonel Gregory John Crossman was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for what the Air Force called one of the most important air strikes in a high-risk area of North Vietnam.

On April 25, 1968, Crossman departed Ubon Airbase in Thailand on a daring radar raid over one of the most active surface to air missile (SAM) sites in North Vietnam, dodging heavy anti-aircraft fire as he partially knocked out a Soviet fighter plane base along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The aircraft disappeared without a trace when it broke formation to veer over a truck convoy heading for the key North Vietnamese supply route.
